Your dining room should be a signature space that compliments your living room and foyer as part of your entertaining area.

Creating your prefect Dining Room . . .

1. Your Dining Room Style

  • An open floor plan has been the current trend in home design for a while. Using a main style throughout creates a harmonious flow. Open plan or not, this room should compliment that style.
  • As with all the main entertaining areas of your home the dining room decor should definitely coordinate with your living room and foyer. This gives that harmonious flow to your home.

2. Your Dining Plan . . .

  • Consider the number of people you would like to seat, and the space your room provides. This will determine your table size and shape.
  • Each guest should have enough space for comfort while dining.  

3. Furnishings . . .

  • The size of your dining table will be determined by the square footage of your dining space. Consider the number of persons that can be seated.
  • A lighted display china hutch with buffet base incorporates storage and shows off your favorite crystal, china and collectibles. 
  • The sideboard is great storage for silverware, linens, and serving pieces as well as a serving area.

4. Flooring . . .

  • Most dining space flooring is usually a hard surface. Your area rug should be large enough the cover the space underneath your table and chairs.
  • A round table is a great option for a square room. It will soften the angles, taking advantage of the extra width. Use a round rug to compliment the table shape.

5. Lighting . . .

  • Your dining space demands a fabulous chandelier hanging above the table. Allow approximately 36" from bottom tip of light fixture to table top.

  • It's illumination is essential for enjoying meals, as well as reflecting tableware and accessories.
  • Wall sconces can be an elegant touch  flanking a fireplace, or sideboard mirror.

6. Creating Exquisite Ambiance . . .

  • After the basics are done, its time to have some fun!
  • Include a spectacular centerpiece or two, beautiful candelabras, and an exquisite table linens. 
  • Coordinate your holiday decor with your dining area.

7. Other Options for that Dining Space . . . 

  • Not really a formal dining family?  Create another usable space for the family.
  • This is an ideal location for the home office, library, or music room.
  • If formal dining is not for you, or if you prefer to use this space for other needs, there are many options. 
  • The most popular is the home office. It's location near the entry, away from other activities makes it ideal.

  • Create a home library with your literary collection. Make it cozy with warm colors, and comfy seating. Curl up and enjoy a classic on a rainy afternoon.
Contemporary LibraryContemporary Library - A home library with contemporary style can be a dramatic space. This space includes glitz, glamour, as well as natural light.
